80M Street is a trailblazing mass timber office renovation in the Washington DC’s Capitol Riverfront District. The CLT system was an addition to an existing building completed in 2001, so attention to materiality and form was key. Hickok Cole worked with Pure + Freeform to match the color and gloss of the original solid Kynar finish, but contemporized the surface with a tech-inspired geometric “Frit” which sits proud of the terracotta pigment. The custom pattern was sent to Pure + Freeform from the architect, and digitally engraved into cylinder to match the scale and contrast desired. The result is a retro industrial surface that subtlety underlines the innovation and vanguard nature of the addition while offering a semiotic understanding of the site through considered design.
