The Columbus Metropolitan Library system closed the doors at the Karl Road branch in early 2021 to debut a brand new 40,000-sqft facility. The original building, built in 1988, was razed to offer a parking lot for the new Karl Road branch. With a new cool, black brick facade, the architect desired a warming element for the exterior. Additionally, the design intent called for welcoming entrances and large, visible windows to attract passerby. Opting for wood in these areas offers a universally recognized and familiar material, but also brings additional dynamism to the exterior via sharp lines and angular panels. The material, Autumn Cherry, offers a distinct figure in the grain to bring visible texture to the surface.
