The Columbus Metropolitan Library system closed the doors at the Karl Road branch in early 2021 to debut a brand-new 40,000-sqft facility, replacing the original 1988 building with a new structure and expanded parking. Featuring a striking black brick façade, the architect sought a warm, inviting contrast to balance the cool tones of the exterior. To achieve this, Pure + FreeForm’s Autumn Cherry, a signature woodgrain finish, was selected for the soffits and walls in a flush reveal system. This material introduces a familiar, universally appealing element while enhancing the architectural expression with sharp lines and angular paneling. The distinct figure in Autumn Cherry’s grain brings visible texture and richness to the surface, aligning with the design intent to create welcoming entrances and large, transparent windows that engage the surrounding community and draw in passerby.
